A bad shower cartridge is one of those problems that sneaks up on you. First it's a little drip. Then the temperature won't stay steady. Then the pressure starts dropping. Most people put up with it way longer than they should, not realizing how simple the fix actually is.
The cartridge sits right at the heart of your shower valve - it controls the mix of hot and cold water and regulates the flow. When it wears out or fails, you end up with all kinds of frustrating symptoms. Leaking when the shower is off, scalding or freezing water that won't dial in, weak pressure that makes you wonder if something bigger is wrong. Usually it isn't. Usually it's just this one small part.
We pulled the old cartridge out and swapped in a new one. That's really the whole job. But knowing exactly what to look for, making sure the replacement is the right fit, and checking that everything is seated and sealed correctly - that's where it matters. A cartridge that isn't installed right will give you the same problems all over again.
Leak detection is a big part of what we do, and sometimes the source is something this straightforward. Not every leak means a burst pipe or a major repair. A lot of the time it traces back to a worn-out valve component that most homeowners don't even know exists. Getting eyes on it early is always worth it.
If your shower has been acting up - strange temperatures, low pressure, or water where it shouldn't be - it's worth getting it looked at before the problem compounds. Small fixes stay small when you catch them in time.
