No hot water is one of those problems that stops everything. Showers, dishes, laundry - it all comes to a halt. We got a call from a homeowner in the West End area of Lubbock dealing with exactly that, and this is what we found when we pulled the heating elements out of their 50-gallon electric water heater.

That element tells the whole story. Heavy mineral buildup, corrosion coating the threads, the kind of wear that doesn't happen overnight. When an electric water heater stops producing hot water - or starts producing only lukewarm water - failed heating elements are one of the first things we check. Most electric units have two: an upper and a lower. Both can fail, and in this case, both needed to go.

Replacing heating elements is one of those repairs that makes a lot of sense when the tank itself is still in decent shape. It's a fraction of the cost of a full replacement, and when it's done right, you're back to full hot water without the hassle of swapping out the whole unit. We pulled both the upper and lower elements on this one and got everything back up and running the way it should be.

If your water heater is struggling - slow to heat up, running out of hot water faster than usual, or just flat out cold - don't sit on it. Those are signs something is off, and catching it early usually means a simpler fix.
